Mom's Coronado Home Gifted To KPBS

Mom's Coronado Home Gifted To KPBS
What to do with Mom's house? In this case, the Coronado home of Myrtle Folsom Lyle. I recently gifted her longtime residence to KPBS. Mother of five and kindergarten teacher for life, Mom retired to Coronado and lived in the house for 16 years until she went on a blind date and fell in love with Dr. William Lyle. Chocolate, orchids and diamonds followed in a traditional courtship that led to marriage, my mom age 87 and Dr. Bill age 81. More than 12 years later, they now reside at Casa de Manana in La Jolla.

A KPBS gift was the perfect way to reflect Mom's love of children and their education. The home was purchased in 1981 and the gift was accomplished using a charitable remainder trust, which avoided a large capital gain on the sale of the property. It also provides lifetime income for me and my wife, Pixie Haughwout. KPBS will receive the remainder of the trust, which is dedicated to its Endowment Fund.

We were able to set up the gift with the help of Trina Hester, Assistant General Manager of Development at KPBS, and Amy Walling, Assistant VP of Planned Giving at San Diego State University. The end result has been a wonderful win-win. Pixie and I will have a reliable source of income and KPBS will receive a sizable future gift that will benefit generations to come.
